Nystatin cream is a medication that is basically used to treat fungal and yeast infections. Each gm of nystatin cream contains cetearyl alcohol (and) ceteareth-20, 100,000 units suspended in aqueous cream base of aluminum hydroxide gel, citric acid, methylparaben, glyceryl stearate, polyoxyl40 stearate, purified water, propylparaben, sodium citrate, propylene glycol, sorbitol solution, sorbic acid, white petrolatum, purified water and titanium dioxide.
Other than the cream form, this medication is available in several different forms in the market such as, Ointment, Vaginal tablets, Powder (for skin use), Oral suspension and oral tablets. Patients allergic to any of the ingredients should not use this medication. It binds an agent called ergosterol, which is considered to be one of the most important components of cell membrane. Since this drug contains certain amount of sucrose that why patients suffering from diabetes are not suppose to use it. Pregnant women and nursing mother should always consult doctor. This drug may interact with other medications so it is necessary to inform the doctor about it. Nystatin cream should be applied according to the prescription.
